Establishing Salah
The Prophetic Method of Worship with Authentic Canonical Proofs
"إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ الْعَبْدُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ صَلَاتُهُ فَإِنْ صَلُحَتْ فَقَدْ أَفْلَحَ وَأَنْجَحَ وَإِنْ فَسَدَتْ فَقَدْ خَابَ وَخَسِرَ"
"The first thing for which a servant will be brought to account on the Day of Judgment from his deeds is his prayer. If it is sound, then he will have succeeded and conquered; and if it is deficient, then he will have failed and lost."
Classification of Acts in Prayer
Understanding the distinction between the mandatory Pillars (Fard) and recommended Prophetic traditions (Sunnah) protects the validity of your Salah and brings ease, clarity, and tranquility to your daily worship.
1. Fard Acts (The Pillars)
Mandatory EssentialsThese are the essential components of the prayer. If one is missed intentionally, the prayer is void. If forgotten, it must be rectified during the prayer and followed by the Sujud-us-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) before or after the Tasleem.
Intention (Niyyah)
Making a sincere intention in the heart for the specific prayer.
Takbirat al-Ihram
Saying "Allahu Akbar" (God is the greatest) to begin the prayer.
Standing (Qiyam)
Standing upright during the obligatory (Fard) prayers if you are physically able.
Recitation
Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha in every Rak'ah (unit) of the prayer.
Bowing (Ruku')
Bending forward with a straight back and hands on the knees until you are still and composed.
Prostration (Sujud)
Placing seven parts of the body firmly on the ground: the forehead, nose, both palms, both knees, and the toes of both feet.
Sitting between prostrations
Sitting upright briefly between the two prostrations.
Final Sitting (Qa'dah)
Sitting for the final Tashahhud at the end of the prayer.
Salutation (Tasleem)
Concluding the prayer by saying "Assalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullah" to the right and left.
Order & Composure
Performing all actions in the correct sequence with calmness and stillness (Tuma'ninah).
2. Sunnah Acts (Recommended)
Prophetic TraditionsSunnah acts are divided into verbal and physical recommendations to perfect, elevate, and beautify the reward of the prayer. Omitting these does not invalidate the prayer.
Raising the hands
Raising hands to the level of the shoulders or ears when making the opening Takbir, before bowing, after rising, and standing for the third unit.
Placement of hands
Placing the right hand over the left on the chest while standing.
Gaze
Looking downward toward the place of prostration.
Recitation additions
Saying additional supplications (like reciting a short Surah after Al-Fatiha) in the first two units of the prayer.
Postures
Keeping fingers spread in Ruku' (bowing), and ensuring elbows are kept away from the sides and the belly from the thighs during Sujud (prostration).
Supplementary Du'as
Reciting the specific Dua before the Tasleem and sending blessings upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Before You Stand For Prayer
1. Physical Purification (Wudu)
Perform ritual ablution (Wudu) or a full bath (Ghusl) if required. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The prayer of a person who does not perform ablution is not accepted." (Sahih Bukhari).
2. Covering the 'Awrah
Ensure appropriate Islamic attire. For men: from navel to knee (covering shoulders too in prayer). For women: the entire body except the face and hands.
3. Facing Qibla & Time
Direct your entire body towards the sacred Kaaba in Mecca, and perform the prayer strictly within its designated Islamic timeframe.
